Donald G. Smith, President

 

Chief Investment Officer.

With the company 29 years, Mr. Smith has devoted his entire career to all aspects of the investment business that support the management of client portfolios. He began his career as an analyst with Capital Research Company. He subsequently became a Director, Vice President and portfolio manager of Capital Guardian Trust Co. In 1980, Donald became the Chief Investment Officer of Home Insurance Company, and President of Home Portfolio Advisors, Inc., which he bought in 1983 and changed the name to Donald Smith & Co., Inc.

Mr. Smith was awarded a B. S. in Finance and Accounting by the University of Illinois, an MBA by Harvard University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from UCLA Law School and was admitted to the Bar Association of California.

Richard L. Greenberg, CFA, Senior Vice President

 

Senior Portfolio Manager/Director of Research.

With the firm 28 years, Mr. Greenberg began his investment industry career at Home Insurance Co. as an industry analyst, focusing primarily on the metals, banking and housing sectors. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from SUNY (Binghamton) with a B.A. in psychology, and received his MBA from Wharton Business School. Mr. Greenberg is also a CFA Charterholder.

Kamal Shah, CFA, CPA, Vice President

 

Trading & Client Relations.

Mr. Shah began his career as an auditor at Deloitte & Touche LLP where he focused on mutual funds and investment partnerships. He then became a Junior Analyst with Advest Securities. Most recently, he was a Security Analyst in Computer/Telecom Software with C.E. Unterberg, Towbin. Mr. Shah graduated from Pace University with a combined BBA/MBA in Accounting. He is a CPA and a CFA Charterholder.

 

Jon Hartsel, CFA, Vice President

 

Research Analyst.

Mr. Hartsel previously worked for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, Goldman Sachs and Banc of America Securities and has experience with energy companies, utilities and financial institutions. He received a B.A. in Economics from William & Mary and an MBA from Columbia Business School. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

 

Velin Mezinev, CFA

 

Research Analyst.

Previously, Mr. Mezinev worked as an equity research analyst at Brandes Investment Partners and J.P. Morgan Chase and as a business analyst at A.T. Kearney Inc. Mr. Mezinev graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Economics from Harvard University. At Harvard, Mr. Mezinev was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He received a MBA degree from Wharton Business School where he helped manage a small-cap value fund.  He is also a CFA Charterholder.

Rolf N. Heitmeyer, CFA

 

Research Analyst.

Mr. Heitmeyer previously worked as an investment banker at Banc of America Securities and Morgan Joseph, and as an analyst at THCG, a venture capital firm. Mr. Heitmeyer received a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Columbia Business School where he concentrated in value investing. He is also a CFA Charterholder.


John D. Piermont

 

Research Analyst.

Previously, Mr. Piermont was a Vice President at Citi Institutional Consulting, a division of Smith Barney that he co-founded in 2005.  Prior to CIC, he was an Assistant Vice President in the Smith Barney Strategy and Finance Group.  Mr. Piermont received a B.A. in Economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Columbia Business School where he was a member of the value investing program.
